Enlightening post! Thank you so much for the really helpful advise and tips. With this, and removing the cache on Firefox, the AAO is running way better. Cheers!

Good post, my sister is dealing with this same thing. I think the fact of owning an Acer was her mistake #1. ;) Don't mean to be a hater, but really, if you're going to go that route, why not just get a Vaio? Nice fix for the problem though...

I'm running FireFox on my Aspire One and haven't noticed an issue, even though I'm running XP which came installed. I did uninstall Office immediately and that seemed to help with a lot of performance issues. My connection times out occasionally when I send a request (prior to page load), but I'm guessing that has more to do with my connection than system resources. However, I'll probably give this fix a try anyway since Netbooks are so underpowered; every little bit counts. Thanks for sharing.

@Helpscribe - All but the earliest Acer One 110s with XP actually come with an HDD not a flash SSD (presumably because XP copes so poorly with a slow writing flash drive). A machine with a mechanical hard disk does not suffer this problem as it has a much faster write speed than the unusual flash drive in the 110.

I personally use a 110 plus SSD with linux, which works fine with the exception of firefox. I've applied the fixes the author has suggested, inlcuding the .mozilla tmpfs partition (I have 1G in my acer), and it's a big improvement, but the best improvement has been from using chromium instead as it doesn't seem to write to disk as much.

I also bought my daughter a 110 with windows XP. Initially I received a flash based one which ran like a dog until I installed a flash disk caching solution (Flashfire), which worked very effectively.
Because of other problems this was returned and replaced by one with an HDD which didn't suffer any speed issues at all.
